Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Data centers being built by some of the U.S.' largest tech companies lead Wyoming's nearly $4.2 billion in industrial projects under construction, but various other sectors, including Metals & Minerals and Power, also stand out.
As the largest city in the state, Cheyenne is pulling in data centers as companies look to expand their online services in the region. Both Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) (Redmond, Washington) and Facebook and Instagram parent Meta Platforms Incorporated (NASDAQ:META) (Menlo Park, California) are underway with the construction of data centers in the city.
Meta is taking the lead in terms of investment, spending more than $1.5 billion on data center buildings at its Cheyenne campus. Construction on an initial two buildings on the 945-acre site kicked off last year. Both buildings will include four data halls, although the initial building also will feature four network equipment rooms, lifting its power consumption from 72 to 80 megawatts (MW). This building is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2026. The second building, without equipment rooms and consuming 72 MW of power, will be completed a few months later. The facility will be Meta's 21st data center in the U.S. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can learn more by viewing the related project reports.
Microsoft has three data centers in Cheyenne, one of which is across the street from the Meta facility. The company is underway with an expansion of one of these facilities that entails constructing a 250,000-square-foot building that will allow the company to expand its Azure cloud computing platform and other services. General contractor Clayco Construction (St. Louis, Missouri) is expected to wrap up the project this summer. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project report.
Wyoming's current power generation projects are dominated by wind energy, which bring with them associated power transmission projects. One of the largest wind projects under construction in the state is the second phase of a project from a subsidiary of CDPQ (Quebec City, Quebec), a global investment firm. The Phase II addition at the Rock River Windfarm in Albany County involves erecting 75 turbines, each with a capacity of 5.3 MW, for combined output of about 398 MW. The first phase provides about 190 MW. Construction on the project kicked off in the summer of 2023 and is expected to be completed in the second half of this year. Mining projects also contribute to the state's industrial activity. The Green River Basin in Wyoming holds the world's largest known deposit of trona, the precursor to soda ash. Solvay Chemicals Incorporated (Brussels, Belgium) is underway with an expansion of its trona mine and soda ash plant in the area. The project kicked off in late 2023 and entails adding 600,000 tons per year of soda ash production to raise capacity to more than 3.5 million tons per year from its present 2.97 million tons. This will be accomplished in part by increasing the throughput for a product dryer from 161 tons per hour to 200 tons per hour of soda ash. The project is expected to wind down this summer. A pipeline project also features in the state's industrial activity. Wyoming will be home to a portion of Suncor Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:SU) (Calgary, Alberta) 132-mile Rocky Mountain Pipeline, which will carry oil from Wyoming into Colorado. Construction recently began and entails installing the 16-inch-diameter line in 10- to 15-mile segments. When completed later this year, the line will deliver nearly 34,000 barrels per day of crude oil from Cheyenne to the state border near Fort Collins, Colorado, before terminating near Fort Lupton, Colorado. Oil and gas major Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) (Spring, Texas) is underway with an elaborate carbon capture and storage (CCS) undertaking at its Schute Creek natural gas complex that not only involves the installation of CCS equipment, but also the construction of a carbon-dioxide (CO2) pipeline and disposal well. The pipeline will run nine miles from the complex to the disposal well, carrying 50 million cubic feet per day of CO2. The project kicked off in 2024 and is expected to be completed later this year.
