Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Dominion Energy Incorporated (NYSE:D) (Richmond, Virginia) is rapidly growing its renewable energy footprint and has plans to further increase it in the future. The company has signed solar power purchase agreements with Virginia and is underway with a pilot-scale offshore windfarm, which it intends as the precursor toward bigger and better things. Industrial Info is tracking more than $11 billion in active Dominion Energy projects.

In the company's recent third-quarter earnings conference call, Dominion Chief Executive Officer Thomas Farrell gave an update on the company's progress in the renewable energy sector, starting with its pilot wind project off the coast of Virginia. Farrell said, "Last month, we received key approvals from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, BOEM, regarding the design, fabrication and installation of our 12-megawatt (MW) pilot project, which is under construction and scheduled to enter service late next year." Construction on the project kicked off over the summer. Orsted U.S. Offshore Wind (Boston, Massachusetts) is providing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

The pilot project is the precursor of potential bigger things to come. Farrell said, "The knowledge and experience we obtained from the permitting, construction and operations pilot will be invaluable as we embark on our programs to develop 2.6 gigawatts of utility-scale offshore wind. ... Our intention is to bring the project, which is located 27 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach, online in three phases of 880 MW each. The three phases will enter service in 2024, 2025 and 2026 and, taken together, will be the largest offshore wind installation in the United States." For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Dominion also is making strides in solar power, buoyed by an aggressive renewable energy plan for Virginia's government. Farrell said, "Two weeks ago, we announced an agreement with the Commonwealth of Virginia that, combined with previously announced contracts, will produce enough renewable power to make roughly 45% of the state government's annual energy use, which is the largest state renewable energy procurement in the country. To accomplish this, Dominion will own approximately 345 MW of new solar facilities and sell the output to the state under the long-term power purchase agreement. The balance of the megawatts will come from a third-party owned wind farm."

Among Dominion's larger solar projects is the 150-MW Colonial Trail West photovoltaic solar plant near Surry, Virginia. The facility is being built on an 1,800-acre site and will use more than 539,000 solar panels. Construction began earlier this year and is expected to be completed by yearend. The project has an estimated total investment value (TIV) of $250 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Dominion also is at work on a solar facility in Spring Grove, Virginia, about 40 miles southeast of Richmond. The first phase, which kicked off construction earlier this year, will use more than 337,000 Hanwha photovoltaic solar modules to generate 98 MW of power. Phase I is expected to be completed by the end of this year. A Phase II addition to generate 150 MW will use 500,000 solar modules and is expected to be completed in late 2020. Strata Solar LLC (Chapel Hill, North Carolina) is providing EPC on the projects, which have a combined TIV of $478 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on Phase I and Phase II.

Dominion also at work on a few smaller solar facilities in other parts of Virginia.

These wind and solar projects of course require new transmission and distribution infrastructure, and Dominion is at work on these projects. For its offshore pilot wind project, Dominion is constructing the transmission infrastructure, which includes onshore and offshore transmission lines and a substation. A 27-mile line will run from the windfarm to a new interface cabinet located on the Camp Pendleton state military reservation, and an underground transmission line will carry power to substations.
