Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial activity in Kansas is dominated by animals and agriculture. While the Pharmaceutical-Biotech and Food & Beverage industries lead in the state's nearly $3 billion in under-construction projects being tracked by Industrial Info, many projects in these industries involve such things as animal vaccines and meat processing.

One of the largest projects underway in the state is intended to replace the aging Plum Island Animal Disease Center in New York. The new National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility in Manhattan, Kansas, will contain a number of biosafety laboratories and associated support spaces to research and analyze human and zoonotic diseases plus develop large livestock vaccines. According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the facility will house the nation's first Biosafety Level-4 lab large enough to house cattle and other large livestock. Once construction is complete, which is expected early next year, the Department of Agriculture will own, manage and operate the facility. Speaking of cattle, Kansas' Food & Beverage Industry boasts a number of beef processing and meat packing projects. In 2020, Empirical Foods (North Sioux City, South Dakota) broke ground on a grassroot beef processing facility in Garden City. According to the company, the decision to build the plant came as a result of an increase in the demand for lean ground beef. When the location is operational, it will more than double Empirical's ground beef production. Having learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, which took a heavy toll on the meatpacking industry in its early days, Empirical says the new plant is being designed to reduce worker contact and provide appropriate spacing. The project is expected to be completed in late 2023. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Food & Beverage Project Database can click here for the full report.

Other meat processing projects in Kansas include National Beef Packing Company's (Kansas City, Missouri) building addition at its facility in Liberal (see project report) and Fanestil Meats' (Emporia, Kansas) expansion of its beef, poultry and pork processing plant in Emporia (see project report.)

The pet food segment also is seeing some action in the state. Hills Pet Nutrition Incorporated (Topeka, Kansas) is expanding its manufacturing footprint with a grassroot pet food plant in Tonganoxie. The wet food manufacturing plant is being certified as a zero-waste facility. Construction is expected to be completed next year. Subscribers can click here for the report.

But food and pharma aren't the only industries with projects underway in the state. Rounding out the top three industries by project value is the Industrial Manufacturing Industry, thanks largely to some big warehouse and distribution facilities. Among these is FedEx Corporation's (NYSE:FDX) (Memphis, Tennessee) grassroot distribution center in Pittsburg, in the southeast corner of the state. Construction on the 250,000-square-foot facility is expected to wrap up next month, allowing the center to be operational in time for the busy holiday shipping season.
