Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Bearing winds of 85 miles per hour, Hurricane Idalia was expected to continue strengthening before hitting the Florida Gulf Coast on Wednesday. A hurricane warning was in effect for the middle of Longboat Key northward to Indian Pass, including Tampa Bay, according to the National Hurricane Center. As of 8 a.m. Tuesday, the storm was heading north at 14 miles per hour about 275 miles south-southwest of Tampa.

The storm's current path misses Gulf of Mexico offshore oil and gas production assets, which lie far to the west.

"Rapid intensification is likely through landfall, and Idalia is forecast to become an extremely dangerous major hurricane before landfall on Wednesday," the National Hurricane Center said Tuesday morning. The storm was expected to make landfall as a Category 3 hurricane with winds of at least 111 miles per hour. Evacuations in advance of the storm were taking place in at least 20 Florida counties.

"On the forecast track, the center of Idalia is forecast to move over the eastern Gulf of Mexico today, reach the Gulf coast of Florida within the Hurricane Warning area on Wednesday, and move close to the Carolina coastline on Thursday," the National Hurricane Center said.

The storm's current projected path shows it would make landfall north of Tampa.
