Natural Hydrogen Hopes High, but Still May Be Years from Viability

Natural Hydrogen Hopes High, but Still May Be Years from Viability

July 1, 2024--Written by Paul Wiseman for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)-- Hydrogen, whatever its source or designated color, is deemed a key part of the energy transition future because of its availability and, in certain processes, sustainability. But accessing hydrogen at its common sources--molecules of water or natural gas--presents challenges of cost, transportation/storage, associated carbon emissions, or all of the above.

One option that would solve both the cost (compared to electrolysis of water molecules) and the carbon emissions of steam reformation of natural gas would be a straight-out-of-the-ground source--which does exist.
