After a report by Reuters on Tuesday, Philadelphia mayor Jim Kenney confirmed Wednesday that Philadelphia Energy Solutions (PES) intends to close its 335,000-barrel-per-day South Philadelphia refining complex within the next month. The refinery suffered an explosion and severe fire on the morning of Friday, June 21. Kenney said, "I spoke with the CEO and leadership of Philadelphia Energy Solutions this morning and can confirm that PES intends to shut down the refinery within the next month." The refinery is the oldest and largest refinery on the east coast. Its closure is expected to affect the local economy and regional gasoline availability and prices.
