Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The U.S. aircraft sector encompasses both defense and commercial aircraft and means big business throughout the country, where billions of dollars for aircraft projects are planned or underway. Familiar names such as The Boeing Company (NYSE:BA) (Arlington, Virginia) have projects along with other smaller players in the aircraft sector, and niche segments such as electric aircraft are beginning to gain ground in the U.S.

One of the largest U.S. aircraft projects presently underway comes from Boeing at its campus in Berkeley, Missouri, which manufactures defense aircraft. Two sections of the site warrant different activity. Buildings on a parcel of land south of the existing facility are being demolished to make way for a new 880,000-square-foot manufacturing plant. On a parcel of land to the northwest, Boeing is constructing a new hangar, radar-testing facility and 90,000 square feet of auxiliary buildings, including aircraft shelters, a fuel calibration building and a fire house. Spokespersons from Boeing have been very tight-lipped about the programs Boeing will pursue at the new plant, although a new fighter jet for the Air Force seems to be in the company's sights. Construction is expected to be completed in mid-2026, paving the way for further development. Work at the Missouri plant is having a knock-on effect on Boeing's project activity as it expands a plant to take over manufacturing a craft from the Berkeley site. Production of the MQ-25 refueling drone used by the U.S. Navy will be moved from Berkeley to a site at the MidAmerican Airport in Mascoutah, Illinois, where Boeing is underway with a 300,000-square-foot expansion encompassing 12 buildings housing equipment to manufacture the drone. Construction is expected to be completed soon. Subscribers to Industrial Info's GMI Project Database can learn more by viewing the project report.

Electric vehicles have had a huge impact on the automotive market, and electric technology is advancing into aircraft design. On the cutting edge of this scene is Archer Aviation Incorporated (San Jose, California), which is underway with the first phase of a production facility for electric aircraft in Covington, Georgia. The company's Midnight model is designed to conduct rapid back-to-back flights of 10 to 50 miles at speeds of up to 150 miles an hour, with minimal charge time in between. Like a conventional helicopter, Archer's electric aircraft can both take off and land vertically without the need to gain speed on a runway, making landings in tight locations a reality for the craft. Construction of an initial production building began this summer and is set to be completed next spring to manufacture up to 650 aircraft per year. Archer already is planning an expansion of the plant, should demand warrant it, which would more than double the facility's square footage and allow for production of up to 2,300 aircraft per year. Other projects are geared specifically toward the parts and components used by aircraft. One of the largest U.S. parts projects could kick off next year, when Bell Textron Incorporated (Fort Worth, Texas) will begin renovating a Fort Worth site formerly owned by Black & Decker Tooling to create "a large-scale and multi-decade advanced aerospace manufacturing production operation capable of producing several aerospace products," according to its application for state incentives. The work will require renovations and structural modifications to the 447,000-square-foot building and a 5,400-square-foot building addition. Bell manufactures aircraft and components for both the commercial and military sectors. Subscribers to Industrial Info's GMI Project Database can click here for more details on the project.

Construction on another aircraft parts project began this summer in Spokane, Washington. Collins Aerospace (Charlotte, North Carolina) is underway with a 70,000-square-foot expansion at its plant to enhance the company's production of aircraft braking systems. The project will increase the plant's footprint by 50% . The site will specialize in Collins' proprietary DURACARB carbon disk technology for brakes and is expected to be completed in the second half of next year.
