Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), in this month's Livestock, Dairy and Poultry Outlook, raised the forecast number of eggs that will be produced in the U.S. in 2024 after positive first-quarter data. The agency now expects production of 7,927 million dozen eggs from the U.S. in 2024, up from 7,864 million dozen in 2023. Production is expected to increase even more in 2025, rising above 8,100 million dozen. To this end, egg producers are gearing up to spend big at their facilities, often expanding them to increase production. In addition, consumer trends toward cage-free eggs also are affecting construction activity in the sector. Egg-processing facilities that create value-added products from fresh eggs also are showing willingness to spend. Industrial Info is tracking more than $600 million of projects at egg-related facilities in the U.S.

By far the largest type of project activity in the U.S. egg sector are expansions to existing facilities, Often, these expansions involve adding cage-free operations to existing farms to help meet the growing demand for cage-free eggs. Cal-Maine Foods Incorporated (Ridgeland, Mississippi), which claims to be the largest producer and distributor of fresh eggs in the U.S., since 2023 has been renovating 12 chicken houses at its facility in Chase, Kansas, into cage-free operations. Each chicken house is approximately 43,000 square feet, which will result in more than 500,000 square feet of cage-free production. In addition to the renovations, Cal-Maine also is adding a new cage-free chicken house, which will be a similar size to the renovated buildings. The project is expected to wrap up in mid-2025. Rose Acre Farms Incorporated (Seymour, Indiana), which claims to be the second-largest egg producer in the U.S., is underway with a similar project, although at a smaller scale, at its Jen Acres egg farm in North Vernon, Indiana. The company is building a new processing facility and constructing six cage-free chicken houses, which will be able hold approximately 1.3 million layers. Engineering and constructing firm Summit Engineering & Construction (Remington, Indiana) began construction on the project late last year and is expected to wrap up work toward the end of this summer. In Mercersburg, Pennsylvania, Herbruck's Poultry Ranch Incorporated (Saranac, Michigan) is wrapping up construction of a fifth laying barn and has plans to potentially add two more. Each barn will be more than 25,000 square feet and 30 feet high. As the fifth barn nears completion, construction on a sixth building could start later this year, followed by a seventh in 2025, adding a combined 75,000 square feet of laying space between now and 2026. Food producers are consistently looking for ways to raise efficiency at their plants, and Wilcox Farms Incorporated (Roy, Washington) will attempt to reduce labor costs by automating free range egg-packing lines at its facility in Roy next year. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project report. Other companies are following similar automation trends for both the packing of fresh eggs and creating egg products.

Farmers Hen House Company cleans, grades and packages free-range, pasture-raised and organic eggs from smaller farms, mostly Amish and Mennonite undertakings, at its facility in Kalona, Iowa. The company is just getting started on expanding its Kalona plant with the addition of a 6,000- to 10,000-square-foot cooler, which will increase its storage capacity when completed toward the end of this year. But it's not only the production facilities that are seeing activity--so are various egg-processing plants. Perhaps the largest such expansion is being performed by Michael Foods Incorporated (Hopkins, Minnesota), which produces foods like cooked scrambled egg products, pre-boiled eggs and omelets through its Papetti's, Abbotsford Farms and Easy Eggs brands, as well as bulk liquid eggs for the catering sector. The company is expanding its plant in Norwalk, Iowa, by adding a 132,000-square-foot building addition to the existing 150,000-square-foot plant. Work began last summer and is expected to be completed in early 2025. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project report.

Wabash Valley Produce Incorporated produces liquid and dried eggs as well as a range of value-added products. The company is renovating a former furniture factory into an 86,000-square-foot facility that will receive liquid eggs from a nearby egg-breaking plant to produce egg patties, scrambled eggs and other egg products, including those for the lucrative Jimmy Dean breakfast products line for Tyson Foods Incorporated (NYSE:TSN) (Springdale, Arkansas).
